Fall outfits for women and men, from class to weddings
In this guide
It is 48°F when you leave for class and 68°F by lunch. Your summer clothes suddenly feel wrong, the winter coat feels like too much, and the pile of knits in the back of the closet has not been sorted since March. That in between feeling is what fall dressing is about: pieces that layer, fabrics with some texture, and colors that match the light outside.
This guide starts with how to dress for fall temperatures in °F and °C, then gives complete fall outfits for women and men for class, work, weekends and dates, followed by fall wedding guest outfits and family photo ideas. Almost everything is built from basics most people already own, plus one or two pieces that make an outfit feel like autumn.
What to wear in the fall, by temperature
In most of the United States and Canada, meteorological fall runs from September through November, while astronomical fall starts at the equinox around September 22. Temperatures fall steadily across those months, and in many places a clear fall day starts much colder than it ends. That is why the most useful rule for outfits for the fall is to dress in removable layers rather than one warm piece.
Early fall, roughly 65 to 75°F (18 to 24°C), still allows T shirts and light trousers; add an overshirt, a light cardigan or a denim jacket for mornings. Mid fall, around 50 to 65°F (10 to 18°C), is sweater weather: a knit over a tee, a light jacket such as a trench, a bomber or a chore coat, and closed shoes. Late fall, roughly 35 to 50°F (2 to 10°C), calls for a real coat, a warmer knit, socks that cover the ankle and possibly a scarf. Our guides to 60 degree weather and 50 degree weather go into each band in detail.
| Temperature | Base | Middle and outer layer | Shoes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65 to 75°F (18 to 24°C) | T shirt or light shirt | Overshirt, light cardigan or denim jacket | Sneakers or loafers |
| 50 to 65°F (10 to 18°C) | Tee or thin knit | Sweater plus trench, bomber or chore coat | Loafers, leather sneakers, ankle boots |
| 35 to 50°F (2 to 10°C) | Long sleeve or thin knit | Warm sweater plus a wool coat or puffer | Boots with real socks |
Rain changes everything; add a water resistant layer and shoes that will not soak through.
Fall colors and fabrics that look right
Autumn outfits look seasonal mainly through texture. Wool knits, brushed flannel, corduroy, suede, heavier denim, tweed and leather all catch low autumn light in a way that thin summer cotton does not. Wool is also practical for changeable days: according to the Woolmark Company, the fiber absorbs a large amount of moisture vapor before it feels wet and responds to changes in body temperature, which is why a merino sweater stays comfortable from a cold bus stop to a warm classroom.
The fall palette is warm and a little muted: camel, chocolate brown, olive, rust, burgundy, mustard, navy, charcoal and cream. You do not need all of them. Pick one or two to add to your usual neutrals, for example a brown knit with the jeans and white sneakers you already wear, and the outfit will read as autumn. Black works too, and looks especially sharp with brown leather and cream knitwear.
Fall outfits for women
For class or a casual day, try a cream crew neck sweater over a white tee, straight light jeans, white socks and brown loafers, with a canvas tote and a claw clip. When it warms up, the sweater goes over your shoulders or into the tote. For a cute fall outfit that photographs well, wear a brown or burgundy knit cardigan buttoned as a top, a long satin or corduroy skirt, and ankle boots; our guide to styling a cardigan has more variations.
For work, a camel or gray wool blazer over a fine knit, tailored wide trousers and loafers covers most offices, with a trench coat for rainy mornings. For weekends, an oversized flannel shirt worn open over a fitted tank or tee, relaxed jeans and chunky sneakers is easy and warm enough into mid fall. For a date, keep it dark and textured: a black knit midi dress with knee boots and a leather jacket, or a burgundy sweater tucked into a black slip skirt with tights.
Fall outfits for men
For class or a coffee run, a gray hoodie under a chore coat or a denim jacket, straight dark jeans and clean sneakers is the most useful fall outfit a guy can own. Swap the hoodie for a navy crew neck and the sneakers for suede boots and it works for a first date. A brushed flannel overshirt over a white tee, olive chinos and leather sneakers is the easy weekend version.
For work, a fine merino sweater or a knit polo over a collared shirt, charcoal or brown trousers and loafers or desert boots feel polished without a suit. A camel or navy wool overcoat covers late fall. For a night out, try a black knit polo or a black turtleneck, dark trousers and a suede or leather jacket in brown. Our guide to layering clothes explains how to keep several layers from looking bulky.
Fall wedding guest outfits
Start with the dress code on the invitation, then add autumn through color and fabric. For cocktail or semi formal weddings, a midi or maxi dress in a deep color such as emerald, burgundy, plum, navy, rust or chocolate works well, in satin, crepe or velvet later in the season, with a wrap, a cropped jacket or a tailored coat for the walk between ceremony and reception. Avoid white, ivory and anything that could look bridal. Our guide to what to wear to a wedding explains each dress code.
For men, a suit in navy, charcoal, brown or deep green fits fall better than light gray or tan, with a tie in a warmer color and brown or dark leather shoes. At an outdoor or barn wedding in October, a tweed or flannel suit, or a wool blazer with trousers if the code allows, keeps you warm and looks right in photos. Wherever the venue, bring a layer; evening temperatures in fall often fall faster than people expect.
Outfits for fall family pictures
Fall family photos look best when everyone shares a palette rather than an outfit. Choose three or four colors, for example cream, rust, olive and denim blue, and give each person a different combination of them. Add texture with knits, corduroy and flannel, and avoid large logos, neon and very fine stripes, which can shimmer on camera. Solid colors and small patterns photograph more calmly than busy prints.
Dress for the location and the temperature, since cold people look tense in photos. Layers such as a cardigan or light jacket let you adjust between shots, and boots or loafers look better in leaves and grass than white sneakers. Couples can use the same palette idea; our guide to matching outfits for couples explains how to coordinate without identical clothes.
A small fall wardrobe from what you own
You may have seen the 3 3 3 rule for clothes: roughly three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes or accessories that mix into many outfits, though the exact version varies. It is a helpful way to plan a fall rotation. For example: a cream sweater, a gray hoodie and a flannel shirt; straight jeans, wide trousers and a skirt or chinos; loafers, boots and white sneakers. Add one jacket and one coat, and nearly every combination works.
Before you shop, move summer pieces that still work, such as plain tees, denim and light shirts, to the front of the closet as layering pieces, and bring knits and jackets out of storage. Check them for moth holes and pilling while you do; our guide to storing knitwear explains how to keep them in good shape. If something is missing, it is usually one warm knit in a fall color or a pair of boots, not a whole new wardrobe.
Common mistakes
One heavy layer instead of several light ones
A thick sweater with nothing under it is too hot by noon and not warm enough at night. Wear a tee, a knit and a jacket so you can take pieces off.
Summer shoes too late
Sandals and canvas sneakers soak through in fall rain. Switch to leather sneakers, loafers or boots once mornings drop below about 50°F (10°C).
White at a fall wedding
Cream and ivory knits are great for daytime, but at a wedding they can look bridal. Choose a deep or warm color instead.
Questions people ask
What should you wear in the fall?
Layers you can remove: a tee or thin knit, a sweater or overshirt, and a light jacket or coat, with closed shoes. Choose warmer fabrics such as wool, flannel and corduroy, and a palette of browns, olive, burgundy and cream mixed with your usual neutrals.
What are the trendy fall looks right now?
Trends change each season, but in recent autumns you will have seen plenty of brown and burgundy, suede jackets, relaxed tailoring, long skirts with boots and heavy knitwear. Adding one of those to basics you own looks current without chasing every trend.
What colors are best for fall outfits?
Warm, slightly muted colors such as camel, chocolate, rust, olive, burgundy, mustard and cream, plus navy, charcoal and black. Pick one or two and wear them with neutrals so the outfit stays calm.
How do I make summer clothes work in the fall?
Layer them. A slip dress goes over a thin turtleneck with boots, a linen shirt goes under a sweater, and shorts give way to jeans while a summer tee stays as the base layer under a knit.
