Indie sleaze: what it is and how to wear it now

What is indie sleaze?
Indie sleaze describes the fashion and party culture that surrounded indie rock and electro nightlife in the United States and the United Kingdom from roughly 2006 to 2012. It grew out of the New York post punk revival of the early 2000s and spread through London, where musicians, models and club kids made it mainstream. The clothes were cheap, a bit grubby and often vintage, pulling from 1970s and 1980s rock, and the point was to look as if you had come straight from a gig and were heading to an after party.
The name is much newer than the look. Online communities had been circling the idea for a few years, and in 2021 an Instagram account called indiesleaze, run by Olivia V, began posting archive party photos and popularized the short name. Searches rose in early 2022, and the conversation grew again in 2024. Writers have debated whether the revival is real or mostly nostalgia built from old photos, and some point out that the original scene was also known for heavy partying and very thin beauty ideals. Those are worth leaving in the past, while the clothes and the carefree mood are easy to borrow.
The music behind the aesthetic
Indie sleaze is inseparable from its soundtrack. The New York bands of the early 2000s, such as The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol, set the tone with skinny jeans, leather jackets and messy hair on stage. British acts followed, including The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party, while dance and electro acts such as LCD Soundsystem, MGMT and M.I.A. filled the same parties. In the 2020s the sound has come back in new forms. Newer artists such as The Dare mix indie sleaze with electronic and club music, and Charli XCX's 2024 album Brat was widely connected to the revival because of its messy, club centered mood, even though it is a pop record rather than indie rock. So if someone asks whether a band is indie sleaze, the honest answer is that it describes an era and a scene more than a strict genre.
Indie sleaze fashion: pieces, makeup and hair
The indie sleaze wardrobe was small and cheap. Black or gray skinny jeans, sometimes ripped, were the base. On top went band tees, thin striped tops, oversized flannel shirts, plain stretch basics in bright colors, sequined or metallic tops and bodysuits, and a cropped black leather or faux leather jacket. Shoes were worn in: high top canvas sneakers, ballet flats, pointed ankle boots or platform boots with studs. Accessories were a little absurd on purpose, such as shutter shades, big sunglasses at night, chunky gold chains, fur or faux fur coats and a big bag stuffed with everything.
Indie sleaze makeup was deliberately imperfect: smudged black eyeliner that looked slept in, bare or shiny skin, and sometimes a bright lip. Hair was messy, with side swept bangs, shaggy layers and bleached hair left to grow out at the roots. For men that meant grown out hair falling in the eyes, a little stubble and the same skinny jeans, tight tees and leather jackets. The overall silhouette was narrow on the legs with volume or shine up top, which is the opposite of today's wide trousers and part of why a faithful copy can feel dated.

Indie sleaze outfits for women
For a gig or a night out, try black straight or slim jeans, a silver sequin tank or a sheer black top, a cropped black leather jacket and pointed ankle boots, with smudged eyeliner and hair left messy. The metallic top carries the party feeling while the jacket and boots keep it grounded. Swap the jeans for black opaque tights and a short denim or leather skirt and you have the other classic version, especially with ballet flats or scuffed high top sneakers.
For daytime, the look softens into a faded band tee, a men's flannel shirt worn open, low slung jeans with a studded belt, and big dark sunglasses. Indie sleaze for men
Indie sleaze fashion for men is essentially rock band off duty. Start with black slim or straight jeans that stack a little at the ankle, a tight white or gray T shirt or a thin striped tee, a black leather jacket and worn black boots or high top sneakers. A thin tie loosened under a skinny blazer, or a plaid shirt open over a band tee, gives you the two other classic combinations. Keep the hair grown out and a little unwashed looking rather than neatly styled.
If skinny jeans feel too tight for you now, a straight black jean still reads indie sleaze as long as the top half stays close to the body, with a fitted tee and a short jacket that ends at the waist. A studded belt, a few silver rings or a single chain, and sunglasses worn inside a dark bar complete it. Avoid mixing in modern oversized hoodies and wide cargos, which pull the outfit toward streetwear and lose the narrow rock silhouette.
How to wear the indie sleaze revival today
The easiest way to wear indie sleaze now is to choose one or two signature pieces and build the rest from what already feels current. A cropped leather jacket and smudged eyeliner will read as indie sleaze even with straight leg jeans, and a sequin top over wide black trousers keeps the shine without the full period look. Where the original era was tight everywhere, many people now keep one relaxed piece, which makes the outfit feel like 2026 rather than a costume party.
Most of these pieces are already in closets or in thrift shops, which suits the spirit of the look: it was built on cheap, found and worn clothes. Take indie sleaze photos with direct flash
The aesthetic lives in its photographs. Party photographers of the era, most famously Mark Hunter, known as the Cobrasnake, shot with direct flash at close range, and those pictures spread on MySpace and early Tumblr. The flash flattens the background into darkness, makes skin shine and eyeliner look deliberately messy, and freezes people mid laugh. To get that indie sleaze photography look, turn the flash on, shoot at night or in a dim room, stand one or two steps from your friend and take many frames quickly rather than posing carefully.
A small point and shoot camera gives the most faithful result, but a phone with the flash forced on works too. Copying the whole era at once
Shutter shades, skinny jeans, a thin tie, a fur coat and neon basics in one outfit looks like a theme party. Pick one or two signatures and keep the rest simple.
Making it look too clean
Brand new, perfectly pressed pieces and flawless makeup miss the point. Let the leather be creased, the tee be soft and the eyeliner be a little smudged.
Borrowing the unhealthy parts
The original scene celebrated very thin bodies and constant partying. The revival works best when it keeps the fun clothes and the loose mood, on any body.

What is considered indie sleaze?

Is Charli XCX indie sleaze?
