Spring outfits: what to wear from March to May
In this guide
It is 45°F (7°C) when you leave in the morning and 68°F (20°C) by lunch, and whatever you chose feels wrong for half the day. That swing is the whole problem with spring outfits. Winter coats are too heavy, summer clothes are too thin, and the answer is not one perfect piece but a few light layers that work together and come off without ruining the outfit.
This guide explains how spring weather behaves, which layers do the most work, and complete outfits for women and men for early and late spring, for class, work and weekends. It also covers spring wedding guest outfits, spring break and what to wear when it rains, which in many places is most of April.
How spring weather works, and why layers matter
Meteorologists count spring as March, April and May, while the astronomical season starts at the equinox around March 20 or 21. Either way, it is a transition season: the temperature climbs through it, but day to day it swings widely, with cold snaps, warm spells and sharp gaps between a cool morning and a warm afternoon. A March day in Toronto and a May afternoon in Atlanta can feel like different seasons, so the season means different clothes in different places.
That is why dressing for spring is really dressing for a range. Look at the forecast high and low, not just the current temperature, and plan to wear the outfit for the low and carry it through the high. The most useful spring pieces are therefore the ones that are warm enough in the morning, easy to take off, and still look finished once they are over your arm or in your bag.
The layers that make spring outfits work
A small set of pieces covers almost every spring day. For outer layers: a trench coat, a denim jacket, a light bomber or a chore jacket, and a thin quilted jacket for colder mornings. Our guides to styling a trench coat and wearing a denim jacket show how far those two go. Under them: fine gauge knits in cotton or merino, cardigans, button down shirts, striped long sleeve T shirts and plain tees.
On the bottom, straight jeans, wide cotton trousers, chinos and midi skirts carry spring; shorts and linen come in only once afternoons are properly warm. Shoes move from boots to loafers, ballet flats and canvas or leather sneakers. Fabrics matter as much as pieces: cotton and linen breathe, merino keeps you warm without overheating, and a trench's tightly woven cotton sheds light rain. Colors lighten with the season, and spring is when cream, pale blue, butter yellow, soft green and small florals look most natural.
| Temperature | Outer layer | Base and shoes |
|---|---|---|
| 40s°F (4 to 9°C) | Quilted jacket, lined trench or wool coat | Merino knit, jeans or wool trousers, boots |
| 50s°F (10 to 15°C) | Unlined trench, denim jacket, heavy overshirt | Knit or shirt, jeans, loafers or sneakers |
| 60s°F (15 to 20°C) | Cardigan or light overshirt | Shirt or tee, wide jeans or skirt, flats |
| 70s°F (21 to 26°C) | Thin layer for evenings only | Linen, cotton midi skirt, sandals or loafers |
| Rain | Trench or hooded shell | Water resistant shoes, ankle length hems |
Dress for the forecast low and carry the layer through the high.
Early spring outfits, 40s to 50s°F
In the 40s°F (4 to 9°C), you still need a proper jacket. For women, try straight dark jeans, a cream merino crew neck over a striped T shirt, a quilted jacket or a lined trench, and loafers with thick socks or ankle boots. A knit midi skirt with opaque tights, a turtleneck and a long wool coat is the dressier version. For men, dark jeans or wool trousers, a fine merino sweater over an oxford shirt, a chore jacket or a lined overcoat and leather boots or sneakers keep the morning comfortable.
In the 50s°F (10 to 15°C), move to lighter outer layers: an unlined trench, a denim jacket over a hoodie, or a heavy overshirt. Our guide to what to wear in 50 degree weather has more combinations for this band, which is the trickiest of the year because it feels cold in shade and warm in sun. Keep a light scarf in your bag; it adds a lot of warmth for its size and doubles as an accent color.
Late spring outfits, 60s to 70s°F
In the 60s°F (15 to 20°C), a single light layer is usually enough in the sun, and a cardigan or overshirt handles the evening. For women, a white button down tucked into light wash wide jeans with ballet flats, or a floral midi skirt with a fitted T shirt, a cropped cardigan and white sneakers, are easy cute spring outfits. For men, chinos in stone or olive, a short sleeve knit polo or an oxford shirt, a light overshirt and canvas sneakers look sharp without trying.
In the 70s°F (21 to 26°C), you are close to summer: linen trousers or a cotton midi skirt, a tank or a linen shirt, sandals or loafers without socks. Our guides to 60 degree weather and 70 degree weather go band by band. Keep one thin layer for air conditioning and evenings, which still cool quickly after sunset in spring.
Spring outfits for women and men, by situation
For class, women might wear a pale blue striped shirt under a cream knit vest, straight jeans and white sneakers with a canvas tote, while men wear a gray crew neck sweatshirt over a white T shirt, olive chinos and canvas sneakers with a denim jacket on cold mornings. For work, try wide cream trousers, a navy fine knit and loafers, or for men, gray wool trousers, a light blue oxford shirt, a navy knit and suede loafers, with a trench over either on wet days.
For the weekend, a butter yellow cardigan buttoned as a top, a denim midi skirt and ballet flats, or light wash jeans, a white T shirt, a chore jacket and clean sneakers, both look fresh. For spring break outfits somewhere warm, pack for summer days and cool nights: linen shirts, swim, shorts, a sundress or light trousers, sandals and one sweater. Floral spring outfits work best when the flowers are the only pattern; pair a floral skirt or shirt with plain cream, white or denim.
Spring wedding guest outfits
Spring weddings are often outdoors, in gardens, vineyards and on lawns, and the weather can turn. The invitation and the time of day are your best guide to formality, as the Emily Post Institute puts it: a daytime wedding usually calls for lighter colors and fabrics, an evening one for darker and dressier clothes. Pastels, soft greens, blues and florals suit spring, in chiffon, crepe, cotton or linen blends. Many guests still avoid white or anything that could look bridal, which is the safest course.
For women, a midi dress in a soft floral or a solid pastel, block heels or flats that will not sink into grass, and a pashmina or cropped jacket for the evening cover most spring weddings. For men, a light gray or tan suit, or navy with a pale shirt, with loafers or derbies and an optional tie depending on the dress code. Our guides to what to wear to a wedding and garden party attire cover the dress codes in detail.
What to wear when spring turns wet
Rain is part of spring nearly everywhere. A trench or a hooded rain shell over the outfits above keeps you dry, and water resistant shoes, such as leather boots, rubber soled loafers or rubber rain boots, protect your feet better than canvas sneakers, which soak through in minutes. Cropped trousers or jeans that end at the ankle keep hems out of puddles.
Choose fabrics that dry quickly and do not show water spots, such as cotton twill, wool and synthetics, and save suede and silk for dry days. Our guide to what to wear in the rain covers umbrellas, shoes and bags in more detail. If you get caught, hang damp clothes to dry before they go in a pile, which prevents smells and mildew.
Common mistakes
Dressing for the morning only
A heavy sweater that is right at 8 a.m. can be miserable by 2 p.m. Check the high as well as the low and choose layers you can remove.
Switching to summer shoes too early
Canvas sneakers and sandals are cold and soak through on wet spring days. Keep leather or water resistant shoes in rotation until the rain settles.
Too many patterns at once
Florals, stripes and plaids all show up in spring. Wear one pattern per outfit and let the rest be plain so it looks fresh rather than busy.
Questions people ask
What is the best outfit to wear in spring?
A reliable spring outfit is straight jeans or trousers, a fine knit or button down shirt, a trench or denim jacket and loafers or clean sneakers. It is warm enough for a cool morning and still works without the jacket in the afternoon.
What colors are best for spring outfits?
Lighter neutrals such as cream, stone and white, plus soft colors like pale blue, butter yellow, sage and lilac, suit the season. Pair one of them with navy, denim or brown so the outfit does not look washed out.
Can I wear white to a spring wedding?
Etiquette has relaxed, and some guests now wear white that clearly does not look bridal, but many couples and families still see it as off limits. When in doubt, choose a pastel or a soft print instead.
What are people wearing in spring right now?
Trends shift every season, but recent springs have leaned toward wide jeans, ballet flats, trench coats, butter yellow and soft green, stripes and relaxed tailoring. Add one trend piece to basics you already own rather than rebuilding your wardrobe.
