How to wear suspenders with trousers and jeans

Button suspenders or clip on suspenders

Button suspenders fasten with small leather or fabric tabs onto buttons sewn inside the trouser waistband, usually two at the front on each side and one or two at the center back. They are the traditional choice, grip without marking the cloth, and never pop off halfway through the evening. The catch is that most off the rack trousers do not have those buttons. Adding them is one of the simplest jobs a tailor does, and some suit trousers, especially formal ones, come with them already fitted.

Clip on suspenders use metal grips that bite onto the waistband, so they work with nearly any trousers or jeans. That convenience comes with costs: clips can dent or wear fine wool over time, they can slip under strain, and their shiny hardware looks casual next to tailored cloth. Use clips for jeans, chinos and workwear, and buttons for suits and dress trousers. Heavy duty work suspenders with wide straps and strong clips are made for tool belts and carpenter pants rather than style, and they look it.

Choose the back style and strap width

Look at the back. Y back suspenders join into a single strap that attaches at the center of the waistband; this is the classic, dressier shape and suits button fastening. X back suspenders cross between the shoulder blades and attach at two points, which spreads the load and reads as more casual. H back designs, with two parallel straps joined by a crosspiece, are less common and mostly found in workwear.

Width follows formality. Narrow straps of around three quarters of an inch (2 cm) look casual and modern with jeans. Around 1 inch (2.5 cm) is a comfortable middle ground for office trousers, and wider straps of about 1.5 inches (4 cm) belong with suits and tuxedos, where they balance the heavier cloth. Leather ends and tabs should sit in the same color family as your shoes, following the same logic as matching your belt and shoes.

How to put on and adjust suspenders

Set them up once with the trousers you will wear, then leave the adjusters alone. You want trousers that sit at your natural waist with a slight upward lift, no more.

   Start with trousers that fit

   Suspenders hold trousers up; they do not fix a waist that is far too big. Choose trousers with a mid or high rise so the waistband sits around your navel. Low rise jeans and trousers put the attachment points so low that the straps pull at an awkward angle.

   Attach the back first

   Before the trousers go on, fasten the back tab or clips at the center back of the waistband. It is far easier to line up now than to fumble behind you later.

   Put on the trousers and attach the front

   Step into the trousers, pull the straps over your shoulders, and fasten the front tabs to the buttons or clip them roughly in line with your trouser creases or front pockets. Make sure no strap is twisted; a twist shows through a shirt and digs in by afternoon.

   Adjust the length evenly

   Slide the adjusters on both front straps by the same amount until the trousers hang at your waist and the straps feel gently taut. The hem should now fall where your tailor intended, since trousers pulled too high show sock and trousers too low pool on the shoe.

   Sit down and check

   Sit, stand and bend once. The straps should have enough give that they do not visibly pull the waistband up or dig into your shoulders when you sit. If they do, lengthen both sides slightly.

Belts, shirts and vests: what goes where

Can you wear a belt with suspenders? Almost every tailoring tradition says no. Each one is designed to hold trousers up on its own, so wearing both looks like you do not trust either, and the belt adds bulk at the waist that suspenders are supposed to remove. Trousers with belt loops and suspenders are fine; empty loops are barely noticed under a jacket or vest. If the loops bother you, a sweater or vest over the top hides them completely.

Suspenders go over your shirt and under everything else. With a three piece suit they sit under the waistcoat, and historically they were treated almost as underwear, hidden by the jacket. Today it is widely accepted to take the jacket off and let them show, which is part of their appeal at weddings. Tuck the shirt in firmly first, since suspenders make a loosely tucked shirt billow above the waistband.

Suspender outfits for formal, office and casual

For black tie, choose button on braces in black or white silk with wide straps, worn under the dinner jacket; traditional tuxedo trousers often have no belt loops at all and are designed for braces or side adjusters. For a wedding outfit or a suit at work, pick a solid or small pattern in a color that echoes your tie or pocket square rather than matching it exactly: burgundy with a navy suit, navy with gray, brown leather ends with brown shoes.

Casually, suspenders with jeans work best when the rest of the outfit is simple and slightly rugged: dark straight jeans, an oxford or flannel shirt, boots or leather sneakers, and narrow clip on straps in leather, canvas or a muted color. With chinos, a knit polo or a chambray shirt keeps the look relaxed. What to avoid is pairing bright, novelty suspenders with a bow tie and rolled sleeves all at once, which quickly tips into costume.

Women can wear suspenders by the same rules. High waisted wide trousers with a tucked in blouse or fine knit are the easiest starting point, with narrow straps that do not compete with the collar. A cropped jacket or long cardigan over the top keeps them as a detail instead of the whole outfit.
